This is generally how your home gets power when using solar. The flexible system allows you to get power in a variety of ways and to save money, even if you draw power from the grid on occasion.
1
The photovoltaic cells in solar panels capture the sun’s energy and convert it to electricity.
2
An inverter converts this power into AC power, the type that powers your home.
3
From there, the power flows to your power panel and then into your house. You’re now running off solar power!
4
Solar power can also be stored in batteries for use at night and cloudy times.
5
If your panels produce surplus electricity, it is sent back into the power grid and you get credit on your bill.
6
If you need extra electricity from the grid, use your utility credit to pay for the power. This is Net Metering.
